A Realistic Decluttering Routine

7:32 AM

When it comes to staying organized and clutter-free, there are a few tasks that you need to get done reguarly. Want to get started? Here's a list of things conveniently broken up into categories that you can tackle head-on!

Once A Day

Sort the mail!

It may seem like a pain in the ass to get that pile of snail mail separated and all, but doing this task everyday will help reduce the amount unnecessary of clutter around your home.

Keep your coffee table clear!

If there is one place that can easily become hoarded, it's the coffee table. Whether it's yesterday's half-read magazine or a drink from earlier in the day, keeping your coffee table clear and clutter-free is a must.

Most of the time (if not all the time), the coffee table is something that is noticed first when entering the living room. Leave it a mess, and chances are the rest of the room is going to seem mess, too!

Clear off the counters!

A mess of different things on a countertop is just like the coffee table. There's all kinds of odds and ends that can build up on a countertop especially if it's a small one near a doorway.

Keep your stainless stainless!

If you have a stainless steel sink (which most of us do), keep it clean! Wipe it down after every load of dishes and polish it as often as you see fit. This also goes for the faucets. The kitchen faucet can easily build up dry watermarks and the bathroom sink can collect toothpaste spit (YUCK!).

Keep toys where they go!

One thing I learned quickly as a mother is that there is really only one way to keep toys organized and put away. That's to make sure that there are designated bins and storage for toys that children can easily put way themselves.

Five minute clean-up!

By taking just 5 minutes at the end of each day to corral loose items around the home and put them where they go will save you so much time.

You may think that it's a big pain in the butt to do after a long day at work, but it's well worth it come the weekend when all you want to do is binge watch Netflix or do something outside.

Make your freaking bed!

My daughter and my husband both don't understand the importance of making the bed. They think that there's no point because you're just going to sleep in it again anyway. WRONG!

While I do get what they mean, I simply can't do it. It is the ONE way to make your bedroom look like a hot ass mess. The rest of the room could be so clean you could eat off the floor, but if the bed isn't made, it looks like dirty.

Once A Month

Tackle the closets!

Take an hour or two to get the closets organized and in order. Get rid of what you don't need and donate what you don't wear.

Go through those drawers!

Whether it's your desk, your kitchen, your nightstand or your bathroom vanity, there are things that are going to get tossed into a drawer sooner or later. To avoid having every drawer in your home end up a hot mess, get organized regularly.

Keep your garage clear!

Have an old bin of clothing? Well, for a lot of us, we just store it in the garage. Then, the next thing you know, there's a big pile of bins and boxes with no place to go. That's when you find that you can't even use the garage for it's purpose...you know, to park. Find a place for those items from the start and your garage will stay cleaner, longer.

Once a Year

Sort the paperwork!

Shred anything you no longer need and organize those that you do. Need to figure out how to get all of the kids' school and art work organized? Grab a file folder and sort by year, date, age, whatever.  It's an easy go-to solution that keeps everything together and neat. If you have more than one child, make labels for the front with their names.

I really hope that this decluttering routine is as realistic to you as I think it is. The first step to tackling anything is by having a game plan and these tips have worked for me very well for quite some time!
