DIY Ruffled Burlap Tree Skirt

Looking for a great DIY project to keep you busy this holiday season? Make your own ruffled tree skirt! You can use a variety of different fabrics for this project, but I opted for burlap because I thought it would look amazing with my existing Christmas decor.

There are quite a few tutorials out there on how to make this style of tree skirt and they all seem to include a glue gun and many, many burned finger tips. I thought that there had to be a better solution. I decided that I was going to take a needle and thread and have at it. You may think that it took a long time to do, but it really didn't. I completed this project in just about 4 hours.

The Supplies

Instructions

I first took my old tree skirt and laid it out on the floor. It was a simple red tree skirt with white stitching around the hem. I purchased this for next to nothing at my local Christmas Tree Shop a few years ago. (If you don't have a Christmas Tree Shop near you, you're missing out!)

I used the plain burlap first. Since my tree skirt had a slit in the back with ribbon ties, I started at one end and worked my way around starting at the bottom. At every point that I folded over the burlap to make a ruffle, I simply put the needle through the top of the fabric and brought it back out (like as if you were sewing on a button). I tied the thread in a knot to hold the burlap in place, I spaced out each ruffle as even as possible until I reached the other end of the tree skirt.

I continued to do this while alternating the colors. I was not concerned with making it absolutely perfect because I wanted it to have that  homemade feeling to it. If you desire to have yours absolutely perfect, you could use a ruler to measure out the spaces between the ruffles.
