My Blogging Routine

12:00 AM

My life is a little hectic as a mom and as a working mom at that, but I try to fit in blogging whenever I possibly can. Would I like to blog full time? Absolutely! Do I have the time? Not so much. I thought I'd share what I do throughout the day anyway.

So, I guess we'll start in the morning. Like most of us, I'm up at the "butt-crack" of dawn. I have dishes, maybe some laundry or general cleaning I have to get done. Don't forget the dinner prep for when I come home. Those pork chops aren't going to marinade themselves, you know! Then I try to dedicate at least an hour to linking up to link parties. I know what you're thinking, but it takes some time to visit other linkers, share my posts and maybe leave a comment here and there. I try to do as many as I can before I give up and schedule.

I am mediocre at scheduling. You would think that after 2+ years of blogging that I'd have some sort of method to the madness. Well, I take advantage of Buffer a lot. I mostly use it for Twitter and sometimes for Facebook, but I like how Facebook lets you schedule from my page itself so it works dandy for me. Do I pay for Buffer? I don't pay for schedulers that's why I don't use it for Pinterest. Gasp! Yes...I don't schedule Pinterest. What do I do? Use the share buttons on the side of my page. Did you faint? Okay.. Let's move on.

After I schedule my stuff and link my links, I shut down shop and get on with my day. I get the hubs set, my daughter to school and I get on with my day job. After coming home, if I'm lucky, I have time while dinner is in the oven to do more scheduling, answer emails and comments, edit the next blog post or plan out my newsletter.

When I don't have that time for dinner to be in the oven (say a half hour or so), I'm jumping back and forth from the stove to the computer. Good thing it's hard to burn green beans from a can! ;)

After my daughter's homework is done and she's showered, I have a couple of hours before the hubs comes home to chill out and finish up. My daughter's reading and I'm coasting through a blog post like this one or getting ready to party with you guys at our Wake Up Wednesday link party (that just so happens to pop up on here Tuesdays at 8 p.m.). Don't forget to jot that down. :)

If I'm SUPER lucky, I can have a few scheduled posts, too. This one, as a matter of fact has taken me about 15 minutes so far to type up....proof reading not included.

By this time, It's about 7 at night and I'm pooped. Nine o'clock rolls around and I get email notifications on my phone and I'm like: "I'm totally just going to deal with that tomorrow" as I fall asleep on the couch.

My quick tips to you are:

  • 1. Don't wear yourself out. I have stopped blogging quite a few times over these past two years and it's because I've pushed myself. I sometimes forget that this is suppose to be fun.
  • 2. Family first. Your kids want to play duck-duck-goose, first suggest a different game because that one stinks and then have at it. Maybe it will make a great post next week. Who knows?
  • 3. Not everything is about money so if you have someone contact you about a review but you know that you don't have the time, JUST SAY NO!

Well, that's my schedule and a bit extra on the side. I'd love to be one of those bloggers with everything planned out to the minute each day, but that just isn't me. Do you have suggestions for me? I'm all ears! Shoot me a comment below!

  1. I have three blogs so I write and schedule them all in one day at the end of the month for the month ahead. With three businesses, three blogs, three fan pages, other social media and homeschooling my son I need to do things in blocks of time and get them out of the way. Gives me more time to concentrate on what's next.

  4. Thanks for sharing this! I really need to get a blogging routine down. Instead I jump from one "important" task to the other...always feeling a bit crazy and never feeling like I'm accomplishing much; even when I am.

    1. I truly understand. Half the time, I feel like I'm always going nonstop.

  5. Your schedule sounds like mine. I've been blogging for a year and scheduling my time is an issue because like you, I have a regular 9-5 as well. But I love to blog and so here I am, reading and commenting, sharing and writing and all that that implies. :) Keep on plugging away! :)

  6. Some great ideas today! Blogging can become overwhelming, can't it!
    I love your suggestions.
Found you on While I'm Waiting today.
Hope you have a day filled with fun!

  7. Thank you for these tips. I have recently started blogging and I am also working full time and sometimes it is just not easy to balance between all the things. I will keep all the ideas in mind :)

  9. I's important not to wear yourself out, and to be sure to keep it all in perspective. I've been blogging for less than a year, and started out thinking I would put up five high quality posts each week. Over time, that number has diminished to 2 or 3 per week, simply because the time and energy required was wearing me out. Thanks so much for your tips and thoughts!

  10. Great blog with awesome tips. Thanks for sharing such great insight. Sometimes I feel guilty for not blogging but as a mom you let me know it's ok especially when you have family.

  11. I loved this post. I always feel like I need to get more organized and have a better schedule, but honestly, blogging happens around the rest of my life. And somehow, that works. I'm really happy to hear I'm not the only one. Thanks
Great blogging tips, too. Those are good things to remember.

  12. Visiting from Friendship Friday at Create With Joy!

Those are some important tips. The 'don't wear yourself out' one especially speaks to me ... because I need a lot of work on it!

  13. Thanks for this! I'm trying to be a consistent blogger, but so far I haven't found a routine that works for me. I can always use some ideas, and I love to hear how other bloggers make it work! :)

  14. Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm pretty new to blogging so it all seems a little overwhelming at times! I think that when I get into a routine, it'll at least feel a little bit easier. Of course, my husband and I are expecting our first baby any day now so it'll probably be awhile before the whole "routine" thing happens! :)

  15. Blogging has numerous moving parts and it's also unique to each type of blogger and what their niche or business is. The one thing we all have in common is burnout. I agree, sometimes a blogging break is much needed if only to re-charge. :-)

  16. So many ways to juggle so many things! It's so easy to get bogged down, overwhelmed and feeling like a failure. Thanks for pointing out that it's easy to do enough and still spend time with family.

  17. This is a great post! I try to get posts done a week or two in advance, but I usually end up doing promotion/social media things as I go. I'm really bad at scheduling, but I try to stay on top of things! Thanks for sharing, I stopped by from That DIY Party!

  18. I try to do blogging work when no one is home that way it doesn't bother anyone.

  19. Your scheduling sounds somewhat similar to mine. :)
Since I've added the Buffer Chrome extension sharing my work and others' has gotten even simpler WITHOUT paying for Buffer. :)

  20. Finding a routine is hard! I definitely have to try to step away and make sure to have time with the family! I usually get most of my work done at night, the hubby and kids go to bed early and I am the night owl. Thanks for sharing at the Wednesday Showcase party.

  21. I know I need a routine and badly - thank you for sharing with Pin Worthy Wednesday

  22. Thank you for your brutal honesty. As a working mother, part-time blogger and part-time student I, too, often find that I'm stretched very thin. Your points here are all valid and essential in maintaining a healthy balance. P.S. I think your site is absolutely lovely! <3 Happy Wednesday!
