Easy Home Decorating Tips

9:52 AM

Many of us find ourselves in a decorating rut. Either our rooms are too big, too small or we can't figure out exactly what it is we need in that random corner. I find myself having these predicaments often. I've come across a few things through the years and I'm here to share them with you today.

Make Your Rooms Feel Bigger

  • Make your room's walls, floors and ceiling the same color so the furniture stands out and not the size of the rooms.
  • Hang striped wallpaper vertically on the longest wall to draw the eye up.
  • Swap out your wooden tables for glass. When you can see through your furniture, it tends to open up the space.
  • Keep your patterns on the smaller scale. Using bolder prints will make the room seem crowded.
  • Mount your curtain rods above the window frames to make the room seem taller.

Cozy Up a Big Room

  • Arrange your room so there is a focal point such as a fireplace or a large window.
  • Never underestimate the comfy and inviting feeling of an over-sized pillow or two.
  • Move chairs away from the walls and into conversation groups roughly within 8 feet of each other.
  • If a large rug is out of the question, try using 3 or 4 stylish mats.
  • Books are a great way to fill in empty spots such as tables, mantels or shelves.

Picking the Right Colors

  • Paint a 2 foot square on the wall and try it out for a few days to see if you like it.
  • Use gray in hallways or dining rooms. It's the perfect color to accent fine dinnerware and art.
  • If you're not sure a bold color would work well on walls, use it in your accessories such as pillows, decorative accents and throws.
  • Green goes with anything. Think of it as a neutral.
  • Take hues from your wardrobe when choosing paints for your home. Obviously you'll be more comfortable with them on your walls since you'll wear them out on the town.

Mixing It Up

  • To create a pleasing visual bookcase, stack your books both horizontally and vertically. Trade out some book space for a decorative accent here and there such as a picture frame or plant.
  • When mixing patterns, they should share either color, scale or design.
  • If you're sticking with one color (whether it's bedding or not), opt for textures that are visually appealing and add interest.
  • You can use multiple rugs in one room in the colors are similar and/or the design is compatible.
  • You can create an eye-catching display by grouping items in similar or the same color.

Get the Most for Your Money

  • The best way to update your bathroom is to change out the shower curtain. Adding a bold pattern or a bright color can instantly make it feel new again.
  • When going with "what's in", buy accessories to add to your space rather than the entire room. At least when the fad changes, you didn't spend too much and it's easier to swap the pieces out.
  • You can easily update your kitchen by painting your cabinets and changing the hardware.
  • Instead of using large mirrors (which we all know can cost $$$), try using smaller mirrors and group them together. Try to keep the frames the same colors for cohesion.

Add Some Pizzazz To a Room

  • Add a few inches of contrasting fabric to the bottom of your curtains. This not only adds visual interest, but it also ties them into the decor of the room.
  • Use unlikely items as plant holders like old stools, chairs or even a ladder.
  • Paint a chair glossy white or black.
  • Update a chandelier by adding magnetic crystals. It's a lot less than replacing the whole thing.
  • Update a lampshade by covering it in new fabric or adding braiding or ribbon to the edges.

Stay in the loop!
